Q. What senior care services does The Amsterdam offer?
A. The Tuttle Center at The Amsterdam at Harborside offers enriched housing (commonly known as assisted living), memory support, skilled nursing care and rehabilitative services — all tailored to deliver a customized plan that can change over time to meet each resident’s evolving needs and lifestyle preferences.

Q. How will I know which level of care is appropriate?
A. Caring for your loved one and providing the right level of care is at the heart of everything we do. Prior to move-in, a wellness evaluation will be completed by a licensed health care provider to determine which level of care will meet the specific needs and desires of your loved one.

Q. What level of enriched housing and amenities do you offer?
A. Enriched housing, also known as assisted living, at The Tuttle Center is characterized by a distinctive combination of individualized care, warm neighborhood surroundings and professional expertise. Those who choose our community will enjoy private studio and one-bedroom residences, and are assured of ongoing wellness evaluations and levels of care that address their specific needs. Our licensed, compassionate staff members are always available to assist with daily tasks, while wide-ranging services and amenities provide the time and opportunity to enjoy the things that matter most.

Q. How does memory support differ from enriched housing?
A. We understand that memory loss, whether Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, affects more than just one person. That’s why we work with not only the resident, but also with their family members and caregivers, to find the perfect balance of respect and care from day to day. Our memory support residences and services are thoughtfully and carefully designed to ensure that residents feel safe and secure. Our program is structured to enhance residents’ confidence in an environment that promotes choice and celebrates accomplishments through familiar schedules and surroundings.

Q. What is the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia?
A. Dementia refers to the loss of intellectual functions (thinking, remember, reasoning) of sufficient severity to interfere with a person’s daily functioning. It is not a disease itself, but rather a group of symptoms that may accompany certain diseases or conditions. Dementia is irreversible when caused by disease or certain injuries. It may be partially or fully reversible when caused by drugs, alcohol, depression or imbalances in certain substances, such as hormones or vitamins.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain, characterized by loss of function and death of nerve cells in several brain areas, leading to loss of recent memories and new learning first, and eventually old memories, too.

Q. What are the important signals that a loved might need help?
A. Older adults have highly sensitive radar that’s tuned in to the signals we send when we’re about to tamper with their control over their future. Keep in mind that you’re partnering with your family member to solve a particular need or issue in their lives. You’re not taking a one-sided approach, telling them what to do or what is best. Your signal to them needs to be genuine and to communicate that you’re on their side.

Q. What if my loved one needs more assistance than that provided in enriched housing or memory support?
A. Skilled nursing offers residents licensed, comprehensive, round-the-clock care in private or semi-private suites, including regular wellness evaluations. Whether the need is for more hands-on assistance with routine activities or rehabilitative services such as physical, speech or occupational therapies, skilled nursing provides a high level of clinical care to ensure each individual’s needs are met, providing peace of mind for those who love them.

Q. Is an entrance fee required when moving to enriched housing or higher levels of care at The Tuttle Center?
A. No. Residents simply pay a one-time reservation fee, which will be applied to the first month’s service fee. What’s more, our services are provided at predictable, all-inclusive monthly rates, so you never have to worry about unexpected charges.

Q. Is The Amsterdam at Harborside right for my loved one?
